Mercedes-Benz AMG W205 C63 Exhaust Guide
A practical guide to choosing an exhaust for the Mercedes-Benz AMG W205-generation C63 and C63 S, including model-year differences, factory valve compatibility, body-style fitment, and valved vs. non-valved systems.

The Mercedes-AMG C63 already has one of the defining V8 soundtracks of its generation, so choosing an aftermarket exhaust should be about more than simply making the car louder.
The correct system depends on model year, body style, factory exhaust configuration, valve control, and how you actually use the car.
The biggest mistake is ordering an exhaust based only on “W205 C63” without checking those details first.
Quick Recommendation
For Most Street-Driven Cars
A valved exhaust matched to the car's factory exhaust configuration is where we would start.
It gives you more sound when you want it while preserving some control over volume during normal driving.
If your C63 already has the factory AMG Performance Exhaust, prioritize a system that works with the factory valve controls.
If the car does not have the factory performance exhaust, choose a system designed to provide its own valve control hardware where required.
For Maximum Volume
A non-valved or track-oriented system can provide a more aggressive experience, but it gives up much of the flexibility that makes a valved setup useful on a street car.
Some systems that eliminate factory exhaust valves may also require electronic valve simulators or other hardware to prevent stored fault codes.
First Identify Your Car
Before comparing exhaust systems, confirm exactly which C63 you own.
You need to know:
- Model year
- C63 or C63 S
- Sedan, Coupe, or Cabriolet
- Whether the car has the factory AMG Performance Exhaust
This matters because exhaust fitment changes within the W205-generation C63 family.
For example, AWE offers separate exhaust systems for 2015–2018 and 2019–2021 cars rather than treating every W205-generation C63 as identical.
AWE also separates Sedan and Coupe applications, and its 2019–2021 exhaust suite is specifically not approved for Cabriolet fitment.
Do not assume an exhaust fits your car simply because the product title contains “W205 C63.”
The Factory Performance Exhaust Matters
Whether your car has the factory performance exhaust can change which version of an aftermarket system you need.
AWE, for example, offers different SwitchPath configurations for vehicles with and without its listed Dynamic Performance Exhaust configuration.
On compatible cars equipped with the factory performance exhaust, AWE's valved system can work through the factory controls.
For cars without the factory performance exhaust, AWE offers configurations with their own valve motors, controller, and remote system.
Akrapovič follows a similar principle.
When its Evolution system replaces a factory AMG performance exhaust, Akrapovič states that its separate Valve Actuator Kit is not required because the exhaust valves can be controlled from the vehicle.
When replacing the basic AMG exhaust, Akrapovič specifies additional valve-control hardware.
That makes factory exhaust configuration one of the first things FacSpec would verify before ordering.
Valved vs. Non-Valved Exhaust
Valved Exhaust
A valved system is generally the better fit for an owner who uses the C63 regularly on the street.
Depending on the system, exhaust valves can change the flow path and sound level, allowing the car to remain more restrained in certain situations and more aggressive when desired.
Best for:
- Daily-driven cars
- Owners who want more sound without maximum volume all the time
- Cars already equipped with factory exhaust valve controls
- Owners looking for an OEM+ style experience
Non-Valved / Track-Oriented Exhaust
A non-valved system removes that adjustability in favor of a more consistently aggressive exhaust note.
AWE's Track Edition is an example of this approach.
On cars where the factory valves are eliminated, AWE notes that the ECU may store a soft code unless compatible electronic valve simulators are installed.
Best for:
- Owners who prioritize maximum sound
- Cars where quiet operation is not important
- Drivers who deliberately want a simpler, always-aggressive setup
2015–2018 vs. 2019–2021
Do not treat pre-facelift and facelift exhaust systems as interchangeable.
AWE specifically separates its C63/S exhaust catalog into:
- 2015–2018 applications
- 2019–2021 applications
Each range has its own product configurations and part numbers.
This distinction should be verified before purchasing any exhaust, even when the manufacturer markets both versions under the broader W205 C63 name.
Sedan, Coupe, and Cabriolet Fitment
Body style matters as much as model year.
Manufacturers may use different part numbers for the Sedan and Coupe because the underbody layout, exhaust routing, mounting locations, or overall dimensions can differ.
Cabriolet fitment requires even more attention.
AWE specifically states that its 2019–2021 W205-generation C63/S exhaust suite is not approved for Cabriolet models.
Always verify the exact body style listed by the exhaust manufacturer before ordering.
Stainless Steel vs. Titanium
Material is another major difference between premium exhaust systems.
Stainless Steel
AWE uses T304L stainless steel in its C63 exhaust systems.
Stainless systems are generally the more conventional choice and can offer excellent durability without moving into the pricing associated with full titanium systems.
Titanium
Akrapovič offers a titanium Evolution system for the W205 C63.
For its 2015 C63 Sedan application, Akrapovič reports a weight reduction of approximately 13 kg compared with the system it replaces.
Titanium is attractive when reduced weight, construction quality, and premium materials are priorities, but it typically comes at a significantly higher price.
Do You Need a Tune?
Not necessarily.
AWE identifies its compatible C63 cat-back exhaust systems as requiring no ECU tune when installed and used as intended.
That does not mean every exhaust-related modification works the same way.
Changes involving catalytic converters, downpipes, emissions equipment, or other engine-related hardware can introduce separate tuning, emissions, and legal considerations.
This guide focuses on downstream exhaust systems rather than emissions-system modifications.
Before Ordering
Confirm all of the following before purchasing a C63 exhaust:
- Exact model year
- C63 or C63 S
- Sedan, Coupe, or Cabriolet
- Pre-facelift or facelift application
- Factory AMG Performance Exhaust or standard exhaust
- Whether factory valve control is retained
- Whether additional valve motors, controllers, or simulators are required
- Whether factory exhaust tips are reused
- Street-use and emissions compliance for your location
- Exact manufacturer part number
Do not order based on sound clips alone.
Fitment and valve compatibility come first.
FacSpec Recommendation
For most street-driven W205-generation C63 and C63 S owners, we would start with a valved system specifically matched to the car's model year, body style, and factory exhaust configuration.
If the car already has the AMG Performance Exhaust, retaining factory valve control is preferable when the chosen system supports it.
If the car has the standard exhaust, choose a system that includes or clearly specifies the valve-control hardware needed for that configuration.
A non-valved track-style system makes more sense when maximum sound is the priority and the owner intentionally accepts the loss of valve control.
The exhaust should be selected around the car's actual configuration — not simply around the loudest sound clip.

FACSPEC VERDICT
Choose the exhaust around your factory valve setup.
For most street-driven C63 and C63 S models, start with a valved exhaust matched to the exact model year, body style, and factory exhaust configuration. Retain factory valve control when possible. Choose a non-valved system only if maximum sound is the priority.
NEED A SECOND SET OF EYES?
Check fitment before you order.
If your exact car, options, wheel/tire setup, or supporting hardware makes the answer unclear, send FACSPEC the details. If we cannot verify it, we will say so.
